Product Summary

Ground Marker is an innovative & proven air safety technology to:
  • Reduce Runway Incursions and improve safety
  • Reduce Runway Occupancy and improve throughput

Ground Marker provides taxiing pilots with fully automatic clear voice advisories, direct to the fight deck, of their precise position on the airfield. From these advisories surface navigation errors, a major cause of Runway Incursions, are minimised or eliminated.

Ground Marker uses the 75MHz Marker Receiver and requires no change to aircraft equipment. Airport surface equipage involves the installation of compact, low power radio transmitters at selected points alongside taxiways, together with antennas embedded within the taxiway surface. Transmitters include digitally stored and user programmable voice messages.

Ground Marker is a fully independent system, which requires no airport infrastructure such as Transponders, ACARS, differential GPS systems etc. The system may be viewed as stand-alone for less vulnerable airports, or as a 'primary safety net' complement to those airports, which qualify for, or require, more advanced surface surveillance systems.

The rationale of Ground Marker is to prevent airport surface navigational errors before they occur.

Further developments of Ground Marker will include automatic control from Surface Movement Radar whereby detected movement of an aircraft towards a hazard, for example crossing Hold Bars with high-speed runway traffic, will produce immediate clear voice warnings to the infringing crew. Additionally, by integrating SMR and approach radar, pilots on short finals to an occupied runway may receive automatic warnings while still airborne, allowing a routine Go-Around.

Additionally, portable and self-contained Ground Markers may warn flight crews of their position on a closed runway.
