Have
you got the technical
resource in place to ensure all of
your products are RoHS compliant
before 1st July 2006?
We
recognise that the conversion of your existing product portfolio
to RoHS compliant products is a challenge in terms of resource even
for the largest of organisations. It is for this reason that we have
developed a RoHS conversion service for our customers.
Do you fully understand your RoHS responsibilities?
The restriction in the use of certain hazardous substances in
Electrical and Electronic equipment regulations 2004 is commonly
known as the RoHS regulations. The RoHS Regulations ban the placing
on the EU market of new Electrical and Electronic Equipment (EEE)
containing more than the set levels of lead, cadmium, mercury,
hexavalent chromium and both polybrominated biphenyl (PBB) and
polybrominated diphenyl ether (PBDE) flame retardants from 1 July
2006.
There are a number of exempted applications for these substances
but even companies operating in sectors currently exempt from these
regulations will still need to be aware of the likely impact to
their business as component suppliers transfer production to RoHS
compliant parts. In our opinion. it is likely that certain non-RoHS
complaint parts will be made obsolete as they no longer become
viable to produce and others may increase in unit cost reflecting
the lower global volumes required.
Additionally, designers may be faced with the prospect of having ‘hybrid’ conditions
in their assemblies where a complete set of lead free components
cannot be sourced and a mixture of classifications of components
are fitted to each assembly.
